By Devon Evans, Gleaner Writer ST. ANN:
SUPERINTENDENT OF Police in Charge of St. Ann, Ray Palmer is appealing to parents to ensure that their children are closely supervised, especially females during the upcoming summer period.
He said that the statistics for last year showed that 29 children were victims of sexual offences during the months of July and August, representing 43 per cent of the total number of cases for the entire year.
"As another summer holiday approaches, I call upon the parents to exercise close supervision over their children and if they have to leave them in the care of someone else, be sure that person is trustworthy and has your child's best interest at heart," Superintendent Palmer advised.
He was speaking on the weekend at the swearing in ceremony of 40 new Justices of the Peace for the parish of St. Ann at Sandals Ocho Rios resort in the parish.
YOUNG AND VULNERABLE
He said that too many of the young and vulnerable citizens in the society, especially children under the age of 16, are being brutally abused by many of those who should be caring for and protecting them.
Superintendent Palmer congratulated the newly appointed JP's, saying that their appointment was very timely.
"As you embark upon this new role as Justices, I am imploring you to perform your duties honourably. Let your voices be heard in the campaign against crime and violence and be unwavering in your commitment to serve your country," he charged.
