Disappointment for some St George's girls
published: Saturday | June 19, 2004

By Petrina Francis, Education Reporter

A NUMBER of students from the St. George's Girls and Infant School on Duke Street, downtown Kingston, are upset because they were placed in high schools that were not among their choices in this year's GSAT examinations.

The girls who converged outside Gordon House yesterday told The Gleaner that they were very disappointed because they were placed at Kingston High School and Holy Trinity High.

When asked why they did not want to go to the schools, the girls all seemed to have similar reasons. One of them explained: "I don't want to go to Holy Trinity because them love to war and I don't like the area that it is in."

A tearful Rose-Marie Baxter, 11, who was placed at Kingston High seemed more disappointed than her schoolmates. She told The Gleaner that she does not want to go to that school because it is "a bad school".

Meanwhile, Devon Lewars, stepfather of one of the girls was not amused that his stepdaughter was placed at Holy Trinity. He said, "I don't like that school because there are many bad boys on the corner and she have to pass there every morning and I can't carry her to school every morning".

Still, a lady who was outside Gordon House said that she was not giving the school a bad name (St. George's Girls) because her niece and her daughter went there and they are now at two of the top traditional high schools in Kingston. When The Gleaner visited St. George's Girls Primary and Infant School yesterday, a source confirmed that some of the students are not pleased because they were placed at Holy Trinity High School. She, however, said, "All schools are good schools and it is what you make of it". She noted that some of the students are receiving counselling from the guidance councillor who is trying to encourage them.
