EIGHT HORSES from the Restricted Allowance IV (non-winners three) group are down to contest today's Caymanas Park feature for the Gerald Farquharson Memorial Cup over 1400 metres, a race which promises keen competition.
Leading lights are PRINCE NATHANIEL (Andrew Thomas), XTRA ROYAL (Joe Buchanan), GALAXY GIRL (Paul Francis) and BLOW WIND BLOW (Howard Newell). The winner is almost certain to emerge from this quartet.
GALAXY GIRL, BLOW WIND BLOW and PRINCE NATHANIEL should have an intense battle for favouritism, while there should be good support XTRA ROYAL and to some extent, HI-JOE.
WELL PREPARED
PRINCE NATHANIEL comes to the wicket well prepared and despite his unplaced effort behind BANJUHAR over a mile in better company on April 15, is back among his peers in a quest for this trophy and a winning run is well within his scope.
The bay colt from the stables of Eraldo Fullerton beat a good field over 1500 metres in his previous race on February 7 when getting up in the nick of time to clip COZY PROSPECTOR. If able to reproduce that performance, PRINCE NATHANIEL could take home this trophy.
BLOW WIND BLOW also won over 1500 metres on May 8 and has shown marked improvement in recent months. The 4-y-o gelding complemented that winning run next time out when just failing to stave off ABILITY GIRL over 1800 metres.
Having worked really well last Saturday (morning best), he could well resume winning ways as he is not too heavy with 54.0kg to fight it out.
HI-JOE, who was five lengths adrift of BLOW WIND BLOW in the race won by ABILITY GIRL, seemingly has a bit to find to close the gap over the shorter distance.
XTRA ROYAL finished a remote third to TOUCH THE POWER in a fast-run 1200 metre race last Saturday and will be happier with the additional furlong. Still, he was beaten five lengths by the runner-up GALAXY GIRL and is unlikely to wipe away that advantage even with the additional furlong.
Indeed, GALAXY GIRL looks best equipped to pull this off from her convenient mark of 51.0kg.
Trained by Roy Shields, the four-year-old filly by Natural Selection out of Michele's Magic chased the out-of-class winner TOUCH THE POWER from some way out to finish nine lengths second, as the winner cruised home in the smart time of 1:12.2. In effect, GALAXY GIRL returned 1:14.1 in finishing second, a time which can stand on its own in present company.
She will not be inconvenienced by the longer distance, having finished a close second to REAL RISK over this very trip a year ago. GALAXY GIRL should welcome this milder pace and is weighted to go one better with 51.0kg.
I am expecting her to assume the lead at the half mile and hold on well to the end.
Other firm fancies on the card are LE CHIC (enjoys the straight) to upstage JAMAICA QUEEN and SELECT PRIN-CESS in the 2nd race, CHAMBA KOO to catch MEDICAL ACCOUNT, NAVIGATOR and DR. SIMRAN in the knotty 5th race, POINT TAKEN (working well) to nab the recent runaway winner MR. N.P.S. in the sixth, the 2000 Guineas third CRUISING ALTITUDE (represents classic form) to outfinish CHOSEN ONE in the 8th and JACK DE PRINCE (working well) to hold SAINT COLUMBA and HEDIA'S PROSPECT at bay in the 9th race for overnight allowance horses.
