Education is key
published: Sunday | June 20, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE PASTOR at my church asked the young people a question last Sunday What is most important in your life? Right away I thought of 'Education'. It has been the most important thing to me ever since high school. I am just an average student but I always make sure to prepare thoroughly for upcoming exams.

I smile as I remember when I was in the CXC room two years ago. I am still smiling now because I know that I had prepared for my eight exams and the results were good. No one had to tell me to study. I am now a student at the University of the West Indies and I make sure to revise every night when exams are near.

Young people need to realise that having an education is key and it is the one thing that no one can ever take from you. I am proud of myself. I have eight CXC subjects and three at 'A'levels. I am aspiring to be a lawyer and I am confident that I will be one.

What is the point of wanting expensive things if you don't have an education to get a job? Education is key and both parents and children need to put serious thought into it. We are living in a society where only the rich kids have golden spoons in their mouths. Only the rich will survive without education. This is so because their parents have money, can buy them expensive cars and the latest name-brand clothes. The poor have to sit back, because of lack of education. Only education can save a young boy's or girl's life.

I am determined to be the best that I can be. Nothing is free, the price of bread rises every time you visit the supermarket. Young people need to wake up and smell the coffee because once they have their education, no one can disrespect them or look on them with a wild eye.

I am, etc.,

ROXANNE MITCHELL

UWI Student
