Blown away by kind words
published: Tuesday | June 22, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE MOST remarkable welcome anyone could have from a total stranger was given to our beautiful island via yours truly. Here the scenario, on Friday entering the United States of America at the MIA, I was blown over (no pun intended) by the kind remarks by an immigration officer, who processed my travel documents.

To say his words were very kind would be understatement. To put it mildly, we have a non-Jamaican who is truly a lover and friend of this blessed island, Jamaica. Upon presentation of my travel documents , this total stranger blurted out these words, "You are from a very beautiful island and i will be there for my birthday soon". I was totally moved by these kind gestures by this foreigner, soon to be American-Jamaican (well he said it after).

This has led me to believe that regardless of our awful and negative image portrayed by a few of our folks abroad, we still have a slice of our island reserved for great commendations.

In closing , may I wish for all of our citizens this wonderful greeting at all our port of disembarkation, in a world of less human travel restrictions. God bless Jamaican and her people.

I am, etc.,

MARC JOHNSON
