CABLE AND Wireless Jamaica (C&WJ) is to run a promotional competition offering another BMW motor car as the main prize, following investigations by the Betting, Gaming, and Lotteries Commission (BLGC).This follows complaints earlier this year that the telephone service provider extended the competition for which the motor car was the main prize, beyond the approved December 21, 2003 date, and consequently breached the order approving the promotion.
MUTUAL DECISION
The BLGC, in a press release issued yesterday, said the Commission on January 28 this year found the allegations to be true and sought legal advice from the Attorney-General regarding its options.
According to the regulatory body, it had agreed with Cable and Wireless that in the interest of ensuring that the public does not suffer any detriment, the telephone provider will run another competition with the BMW as the main prize; ensure that all its internal processes for running the competition conform to rules the BLGC prescribes; and that it will hold the competition under the BLGC's supervision, allowing all persons who entered the original draw to be automatically re-entered in the new draw.
The release noted that it was further agreed that all other persons affected by the change in the advertised draw date will receive a chance to enter the new competition, which will be open to the public between August 16 and 27, this year.
The decision to initiate criminal proceedings, as prescribed by the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act, for the offence Cable and Wireless committed, is in the discretion of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
