THE EDITOR, Sir:
PLEASE GIVE me even a small space in your columns to ask someone to show us the way to the Morant Point Lighthouse, in St. Thomas.
The record shows the lighthouse was built by the British in 1842 and in 1988, Hurricane Gilbert floodwaters washed away the main road leading to the lighthouse. Since then local and foreign visitors have difficulty travelling to places like 'Top House', 'Morass-Corner', 'Holland Town', 'Spring Side', 'Sykes Lane', and numerous other places which I don't have space to mention in one letter.
I spoke to some of the 'lost visitors' on many occasions when I had to show them the way; many of them came to carry out research within their field of study at universities, local and foreign.
I believe the Morant Point Lighthouse is used as a recreational venue for schools, churches and small groups. And the permission can be obtained from the Harbour Master's Department in Newport East, Kingston.
I see the need for some signs erected (starting at Golden Grove) to show the way through Spanish Wood, at each road junction, while we wait on a proper roadway to the lighthouse at Morant Point. And I am sure our visitors will say well done for a worthy cause. Thank you.
I am, etc.,
