THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS with great distress that I send this letter. I, like so many Jamaicans, observe the many ills of the society but decide to ignore some in order to prevent a total mental collapse, but I refuse to ignore this one. One of the many silly things I see occurring in this nation is the construction of the U.S. embassy in Liguanea. Why is such major construction being done in a residential area?
An embassy is not even a 'regular' business. There are so many security risks for the residents of the surrounding areas, because I am sure with all the bomb deflection devices there will be little or no harm to the U.S. compound. The traffic is already so horrible in the Liguanea area, the influx of hundreds of cars daily will only make it much more horrible. There has been talk that the embassy can only continue ahead if they sort out the matter of parking, if they do not what will happen? Shouldn't that have been sorted out before?
There are some that welcome the embassy citing that it will provide employment for those in the adjacent community of Standpipe. There can be of course some gainful employment but moreso it will more than likely be a river flow of vendors devaluing the property of those in surrounding areas as well as extra road congestion.
Isn't there some legal means of stopping this construction, is there no one willing to take up this cause? And for the record I do not reside in the immediate surroundings of the compound.
I am, etc.,
