GSAT scholar toast of Trench Town
published: Tuesday | June 29, 2004

By Damion Mitchell, Staff Reporter

FELECIA WISHART is still bubbling with joy after being named the top Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) awardee at the Trench Town Primary School in south St. Andrew.

Felecia, 13, attained a 74.4 per cent average and will be attending St. Hugh's High School come September.

"I am really happy," she said, noting that it was especially difficult for her to attain such a performance given the frequency of violent flare-ups in the community of Trench Town where she lives.

DETERMINATION

"It was very difficult because when gunshot is firing, I don't get to come to school to catch up with the other students," she said.

But determined to surmount her challenges, Felecia always studied at school when she had the chance and did further reading at home.

Neta Blair, Felecia's teacher, was pleased with her performance. "Ever since I came here two years ago, I realised that she was a promising child and I always told her that if she works hard she could be one of those that could make it in the GSAT," she said.

In the meantime, Felecia said she would be seeking to improve her competence in mathematics. She attained 61 per cent in that subject area compared to 82 per cent in science, 76 in social studies, 70 per cent in language arts and 83 per cent in communication task.

Kareen Campbell, 12, Felecia's best friend, has been awarded a place at the Trench Town High School. She said she, too, was elated about Felecia's achievement and that although they will be attending different schools in September, their friendship would continue, as their years of bonding were too compelling for them to be separated.

"She is a bright girl and she is a good friend. She always helps me with my work and whenever I don't have any money to buy anything she would buy something for me," said Kareen.
