English is the way
published: Thursday | July 1, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ONCE AGAIN Doreen Bramwell is on the money when it comes to the betterment of Jamaica. Her letter of June 29, pertaining to patois must be regarded prudently. Where in the world has anyone seen employers giving accolades for proficency in patois? Not even in the country where some are yearning for it's propagation.

Years ago the learned Mervin Morris had a similar belief, but seems to have shelved such an idea since the "verbs" in patois cannot or could not be declined.

The educational department should just say no. English is the way.

I am, etc.,

VINCENT WHITE
