THE EDITOR, Sir: EARLIER THIS year on May 27, the Alvernia Preparatory school in Kingston had their very own Spanish Day. For many students in the education system today, they are not offered the chance of learning a second language until high school.
In the world in which we live, a second language is an added benefit to any person, no matter their job level.
The principal of Alvernia Prep. School, Maxine McKenzie, has admitted that she saw a need for students to be exposed to a foreign language as early as possible. In doing this, they are more likely to develop understanding of foreign cultures and have the basic understanding of the language.
The students played an integral role in their celebration. from pre-school to grade six. The students literally took the reins and guided themselves throughout the whole programme. Under the guidance of the two native Cuban teachers, Profesora Maria Valdez and Señora Niamey Castro, the students rehearsed and practised from the beginning of the school year until the culmination of their efforts this year.
Pieces performed by the students included songs such as Jamaica by the grades 4-6 students, El Cucu: Dulcemente el Burro y Dame la Mano y Danzaremos by the grade 1 students, Que Bonitas Son las Flores by the grade 2 students, Guajira Guantanamera, original Latin dances and much more.
So creative and original was this idea that they had to invite Senator Deika Morrison, a past student of the institution, the Cuban Ambassador's wife, Adriana Messa and a host of others. CPTC upon hearing about this event, were inclined to film the entire occasion and currently the tape is available at the school for viewing or purchase.
With this said, and with this tiny school's efforts, one has to wonder where the supposed breakdown in the education system is. They managed to undertake a feat that more accomplished schools (judging by society's standards) have not. It is therefore possible to say that if this school can, any school can. This is done solely to enhance our children's education and if we are not willing to go the extra mile for our children., who will?
I am, etc.,
