Gay activists going too far
published: Saturday | July 3, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THESE GAY rights activists in the United Kingdom are taking things too far by preventing the Jamaican DJs from performing there. Whatever happened to freedom of thought and expression? If someone believes that something is immoral he has his rights to talk about it.

What is our Government doing to protect our right of freedom of speech, and more importantly to save one of our fastest growing foreign exports? What about the Jamaicans and other people who believe that what these DJs are saying is true? Don't they have the right to hear something that they enjoy?

If the lyrics to these songs offend anyone, then it is their choice whether they want to listen to it or go see the shows, but don't try to take away the privilege of another person who enjoys these songs and wishes to hear the message of these artistes.

I appeal to these DJs not to give up their right to free expressions. The money may be tempting but will it be worth it when in the future your child or grandchild tells you he/she is a homosexual, all because when you had a chance to educate the youth that this behaviour is wrong you bowed to these people when they applied a little pressure?. This will be a true test for the DJs.

I am, etc.,

ANDRIA SMYTHE
