Give teachers preferential treatment
published: Saturday | July 3, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN LIGHT of the fact that tertiary education funding is no more, then no pressure should be placed on the graduates of tertiary institutions to give anything back except to those who have helped them along the rough and winding road.

Our lobbyists consider it the wise or more businesslike way to go, to effectively sell us out or neglect for want of a better word. Regardless of the pressures it must be understood that teachers are essentially miracle workers and they do this every day, religiously. Since this is a significant aspect of the life of any country our, teachers should have received preferential treatment.

Fine, we need a literate society, so we bank on early childhood education, but who is going to teach these children and others after them to read? The very rich? Because only they will be able to afford it. We all will learn, but who will teach what must be learnt?

I am, etc.,
