Divert that energy to women's cause
published: Saturday | July 3, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THERE HAVE been many discussions, letters etc. concerning the recent developments in England when Beenie Man was banned from performing in a concert planned in that country. This was based on the homosexuals being upset over Beenie Man's music concerning their lifestyle.

It then occurred to me that the homosexuals are taking a stance on the intervention of their lifestyle by the heterosexuals and are fighting for their cause. The important thing is, they have been successful in England. And then it occurred to me that if women were to put the same energy into taking a stance concerning the derogatory remarks of our physical attributes present in the lyrics in some of the music that is played today, maybe we would be just as successful. Regardless of how one may dislike the lifestyle of the homosexuals, they do not care. They believe they have a position in society and they are doing everything in their power to protect that position. Why can't we do the same for the position we hold as women in society?

To go a step further, most of the negative attitudes vented towards the homosexuals are from the males. Why can't they apply some of that energy also to the cause of protecting women from the onslaught meted out to us in some of the music being played? I will not for one minute think that the males find it more important to deal with issues concerning homosexuals than that of the respect that should be shown to women.

Just food for thought.

I am, etc.,

J. ROWE
