A TEAM OF eminent persons drawn from the region is slated to address the Private Sector Organisations of Jamaica (PSOJ)/Mona School of Business (MSB) Symposium on Trade to be held under the theme 'Trade Connections: Your Link to the World' at the Knutsford Court Hotel on Wednesday, July 14, 8:30 a.m. 5:30 p.m.
With the Caribbean Single Market Economy just months away from coming into effect CARICOM will take the spotlight as a central topic.
Earl Jarrett, Chairman of the PSOJ's Trade Committee, said the symposium will "offer our business partners a clearer picture of the issues related to the emerging trade regimes and the opportunities that await them if they position themselves appropriately."
Each presentation will be followed by a panel discussion also featuring luminaries in the various areas drawn in the main from Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica.
Among the panellists slated to participate area:- Ambassador Derrick Heaven, chairman, Sugar Industry Authority, Opposition Senator Bruce Golding, Opposition Spokesman on Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Mr. Edward Ince Partner, Prism Services, Inc Barbados, Mr. Patrick Sibblies, president Caribbean Agri-Business As-sociation, Senator Dwight Nelson, president, Jamaica Joint Confederation of Trade Unions, Mr. Esteban Perez, UN ECLAC, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Rosalea Hamilton, chief executive officer, Institute of Law and Economics, and Mrs. Judith Wedderburn of Freidrick Ebert Stiftung both of Jamaica.
DEVELOPMENTS
The symposium is the first in a series of high impact, participatory sessions which the PSOJ Trade Committee will be staging for the business community over the coming year to update them on developments in global trade and the new dispensations which are to come into effect soon.
These include the CARICOM Single Market Economy (CSME), the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The symposium will be opened by the Hon. K.D. Knight, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica who will address 'International Trade Negotiations and the Prospects for Caribbean Businesses.'
