Go with Chuck
published: Thursday | July 8, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE JAMAICA Labour Party stands, at present, as a dysfunctional political entity.

If the party delegates fail to get the leadership situation right in November, like the Workers Party of Jamaica and National Democratic Movement before it, chances are the JLP will become a failed political entity.

With Mr. Seaga's pending resignation, names are already being thrown around as his possible replacement. Apart from two people, most have the constituency appeal, but lack national allure. One of these individuals, Mr. Bruce Golding, has immediate national magnetism, however, the delegates should ask themselves this: if Mr. Golding were elected president of the party would the wrangling end, or would his election lead to other rounds of fights? I think the latter. Expect the Seaga loyalists to make his life hell! What the JLP immediately need is party unity; without that they can forget about winning elections. That brings me to the other individual, the very intelligent and educated Mr. Delroy Chuck. Mr. Chuck is the only person who has the capacity to unite the divided forces, renew the party and effectively appeal to the Jamaican masses that this bankrupt People's National Party government must go.

I am, etc.,

MICHAEL BROWN
