Weak-kneed leaders
published: Thursday | July 8, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

'THE TRUTH is an offence but not a sin.' These are the words of one of the most famous Jamaicans. So why not listen to his words?

The many new projects that are being passed by National Environmental Planning Agency (NEPA) and other regulatory bodies regardless of planning guidelines, are just another display of our weak-kneed leaders. These guidelines, some put in place decades ago, are being sidelined to facilitate rich and powerful entities.

There was a time when the erection of a building was not possible without a building approval notice being posted outside the property for all to see and have the opportunity to raise whatever objections they had prior to any construction taking place, and this is how it still is in the civilised world. The developers of a parcel of land adjacent to the Dolphin attraction in Ocho Rios have posted such a notice and this is the correct procedure.

US EMBASSY

Recently, building permission was granted to the United States to construct their Embassy in an area protected by covenants that are contrary to this type of development taking place, and regardless of the thousands of commuters that will be inconvenienced. Why are our leaders not standing up for its citizens? Why are we allowing the degradation of our environment to continue?

I ask these questions to let the truth be heard, and for us to let those in authority listen, and start making decisions in our interest.

I am, etc.,

ANTHONY MOYSTON
