THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WANT to protest most vehemently the shooting and killing of Ena Grant. This was not just another murder. The fact that she was killed while in church speaks volumes of the type of gunmen with whom we are dealing. This killing is similar to the incident some weeks ago in rural St. Andrew where a coffin was dug from a grave and shot up several times. The unmistakable message from the gunmen to the decent people of Jamaica- in case we had missed it before- is that they have no fear of God, man or duppy.
I may have missed it, but to date I have not heard any statement issued by any of our local church organisations. I am very certain that there would have been much hue and cry had this murder occurred in a middle-class congregation.
The killing of Ena Grant highlights the situation prevailing in the Land Lease area where people including very young girls live in constant fear for their personal safety.
We are in serious trouble as a nation because those of us who ought to be brave are weak and those who ought to be fearful are brazen. To compound it all our people have cast off all vestiges of restraint. We are a nation with much blood on our hands and it gets worse daily- 150 killed in 30 days is horrible. We need to be careful otherwise we may well find that as a nation we are a fitting candidate for divine wrath.
I am, etc.,
