Port Royal for sale?
published: Friday | July 9, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a concerned Jamaican living in the United States of America. I read an article recently about representatives of an American salvage company preparing to dive for treasures in the sunken city of Port Royal.

Is the Government about to sell the last piece of Jamaica away? That is part of our heritage. How can they promise or even give the diving company half the bounty of whatever is being retrieved from the ocean floor.

All that treasure needs to stay there or brought up and placed in a national museum for all present and future Jamaicans to see.

You can go no place on earth and bargain for another country's treasures, historic landmarks etc. I am hoping they rethink this step that they are about to take.

I am, etc.,
