RJR Corporate Raceday July 17
published: Friday | July 9, 2004

THE FIFTH annual RJR Corporate Raceday at Caymanas Park on Saturday, July 17 promises to be bigger than ever.

Highlight of the meet will be the fifth running of the RJR Classic over 1500 metres. An overnight allowance contest for three-year-olds and up, the race offers a total purse of $490,000.

The launch was held live on Monday evening during the hour long 'Eye On Sport' programme on TVJ, hosted by Dahlia Harris.

The RJR Group will also use the occasion to bring advertisers, listeners and viewers together for an afternoon of entertainment and fun, while rewarding those advertisers who have made significant expenditure during the past year under the infield tent.

The under the tent activities include the Golden Microphone Awards which as usual will go to the top Advertiser and the top Advertising Agency, as well as a fashion show featuring Saints International models, the up and coming singing group Inque in concert and, of course, the popular Parade of Hats competition which last year was won by Christine King.

PRIZES

There will be prizes for the best purple and yellow outfits (the RJR Group colours) and best hats. The afternoon's events will be carried live by TVJ and Radio 92FM between 12 and 6:00 p.m. Last year Red Stripe and CGR Communications Limited topped the respective categories in the Golden Microphone awards.

Among those speaking at the launch were Gary Allen, director of Operations RJR Group; Lloyd Pusey, brand manager Radio 92FM and CTL's racing secretary, Denzil Miller Jr.

Allen described the RJR Corporate raceday as "a success story we are continuing to build on". He also spoke of the significant of the RJR Group physically coming together for the first time under one roof, so to speak.

In his turn, Denzil Miller Jr. noted that the overnight allowance class is the most competitive in racing and this augurs well for the race.

STARTERS

He said the probable starters are the recent winners GOOD COMPANY, ZAMA and PEACE & LOVE, along with CAPTAIN BONE, FORMALLY GOLD, BLACK THATCH, BANJUHAR, MEDIC ON BOARD, LADY KAYLA and RED GENERAL, among others.

Noting that the race has the potential of growing and getting better, Miller added that the card will also facilitate the Lester Spaulding Gold Cup, while the popular Kiddies Stables will be activated. Previous winners of the RJR Classic are as follows:

BODY & SOUL (2000), RESTLESS WARRIOR (2001), CAPTAIN BLIGH (2002) and FORGOTTEN HERO last year.
