BLACK RIVER:

MINISTER OF Water and Housing Donald Buchanan has challenged Robert Pickersgill, chairman of the People's National Party (PNP) to start filling vacant constituencies where potential candidates exist.

He was speaking at the annual conference of his St. Elizabeth South West constituency at Independence Park in Black River last Sunday.

"Dorothy Buchanan (the Minister's wife), who has been serving the Brompton Division for over six years, is aspiring for leadership in this constituency at a higher level - so I understand it." Mr. Buchanan said. "I want to challenge our party chairman that where constituencies are vacant we should start filling them now."

Mr. Buchanan also told party supporters present at the conference to stop the grumbling and go out into the field and do the work of the party. "A lot has been accomplished under the PNP, do not buy the view that nothing not going on; go out into the field and do the work of the party," he stressed.

ON TRACK

For his part Minister of Transport and Works, Robert Pickersgill, who was present at he conference, said the net international reserve (NIR) was currently at US$1.7 billion and the economy was on track. He said that young people must prepare themselves in order to face the challenges ahead.

"The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is hungry for political power, so they will do anything to achieve it, but we cannot allow that," Mr. Pickersgill said.
