Letter of the day - Set special times for heavy-duty vehicles
published: Wednesday | July 14, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WITH THE amount of traffic on our roads nowadays, it seems that everybody has to be jostling for road space in order to get to their destination on time. However, of late I have found cause to be concerned.

It seems that a lot of heavy-duty equipment such as tractors, front-end loaders, rollers and other such machines are also competing for road space, especially at critical hours of the morning mainly between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m.

While these extremely slow machines move along our road way it allows for a long line of traffic to amass behind them, sometimes coming to a complete halt. Where it may be unsafe to overtake, motorists have to sit in line wasting valuable time.

This might be a foolish suggestion but couldn't owners of these equipment set up a time-table drafting where they need to go and by what time they need to get there? By so doing, they could try to make an early start, say between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. in order to beat the traffic.

While I understand that they too need to go about their business, due consideration must also be given to other road users as well.

I am, etc.,
