THE EDITOR, Sir:DESPITE THE thousands of tributes and accolades attributed to the life of the Most Hon. Hugh Lawson Shearer, expressions will always be inadequate because of the giant stature of a man who epitomized peace, love, justice, and profound humility.
He was a champion for all workers, from the grass roots level to the executive, a statesman who recognised, respected and represented people of all persuasions, including the media.
An appropriate quote from perhaps the best well-known civil rights leader could aptly "The measure of a man is not where he stands in times of comfort and convenience, but in times of challenge and conflict."
He will long be remembered for his warmth, diplomacy and fatherly guidance to so many. I have been one such recipient whose life has been positively influenced by that giant-like benevolence. May his rich legacy be a beacon in illuminating our social, economic and political future, and may his soul rest in peace.
Deepest condolences to his wife and family.
