THE EDITOR, Sir:I HAVE been having a close look at the reports from Jamaica regarding the race for the Jamaica Labour Party leadership. With the pending resignation of Mr. Seaga in November, I am sure the senior members of the party will see this as an opportunity to lead.
What I would suggest is that the JLP adopts an internal policy of having a two-term leadership, similar to the USA. This would reduce the rifts in the party as different persons would be given a chance to lead the party for two terms only.
What the JLP should focus on is forming the next government. They must show the people of Jamaica that they are a united party with goals and visions for Jamaica. But if the electorate is aware of internal squabbles only, this will not do them any good.
If Portia Simpson Miller is elected as the next People's National Party leader there is a strong possibility that she will become the next Prime minister. Nothing is wrong with that. However, as she is from the 'old school of the PNP' it is likely that her policies will be the same as Mr Patterson's. What we need is a change for the better and to do that the JLP must show the people of Jamaica that they are different and are capable.
I am, etc.,
