Take a grip, security forces
published: Thursday | July 15, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WE NEED to get an explanation from the security forces why they are not making serious attempts to eradicate the 'One Order' and other gangs which are sowing fear and murder throughout the country.

Why can't the mango-eating soldiers at Up Park Camp be deployed to surround Spanish Town and challenge the gangs who are running rampant, shutting down businesses and sowing fear? Do they not know about undercover crime-fighting? Let us hear if the politicians are putting restraining collars on the security forces by saying "you cannot go into my constituency, wait things will soon calm down." This is a country of strong hypocritical tendencies.

We have journalists like Ian Boyne and Melville Cooke criticising George Bush about the Iraq war and yet the murder rate in Jamaica surpasses the death of U.S. soldiers in a war.

We have an army and yet they never seem to challenge marauding gang men, but showing up days after incidents when the gang men have long gone.

I am, etc.,

JOHN ANTHONY
