LETTER OF THE DAY:
Why no parks in Portmore?

published: Saturday | July 17, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ON A recent Saturday afternoon, my husband and I went looking for a cool spot just to relax, chill out and enjoy each others company.

We headed towards Hellshire and drove for a while before we could park on the roadside under some trees outside a small hotel. While driving I lamented on how highly populated Portmore was and yet there was not one single park or green area to be found anywhere.

It pains my heart every time I see another commercial building going up in Portmore. Why has it not entered anyone's head that the more we cut down the trees to put up buildings the less oxygen is being created for breathing?.

In Greater Portmore the houses are closely packed and there is no space for trees. It is stiflingly hot and in the summer, I'm sure the residents can only imagine escaping to an area where there are lovely shaded areas under huge green trees, grass and a breeze like you have never felt blowing gently off the sea. I know I have, many times.

The land space is available. I drive pass so many unoccupied, overgrown with shrub and bushes parcels of land and I wonder at the benefits of developing these areas for us and our children.

Portmore does not need anymore banks, shopping complexes and huge hardware stores. We need organised vegetation and a community we can be proud to live in. Mr. George Lee or any other private organisation, there are tangible benefits to be gained from creating a project that is environmentally-friendly and contributes to sustainable development in this country.

I am, etc.,

D. HIGGINS

Greater Portmore
