JLP: Squabbling since 1962
published: Tuesday | July 20, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I NOTE with interest the naiveté of your letter writers with regards to squabbles in the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).

In 1962 there was squabbling, but due to strong leadership of then leader of the JLP, The Rt. Excellent Sir Alexander Bustamante, matters were kept in line, and since the media were not as highly-developed as now, it was not so obvious.

In 1966, after Sir Donald Sangster died, there was squabbling for the next Prime Minister. The Most Hon. Hugh Lawson Shearer was eventually named leader.

In 1974, Mr. Seaga became leader and between 1974 - 2004 there were many instances of squabbling. In fact he has resigned or offered to resign several times during that period.

We tend in Jamaica to view things in the present for our own political purposes and forget where it all started. Clearly Mr. Bruce Golding did not create the squabbling.

I am, etc.,

KAREN MCPHERSON

LAWSON
