THE EDITOR, Sir:
MR RAMON Colas's article published on July 17, was a great shock to me. I am sure there is a racism problem in Cuba there is usually one everywhere people of different races live together, human nature being what it is.
But to state that there are virtually no black hotel maids and or waiters in Cuba is downright ridiculous. I have personally vacationed in the country and have met people who look like me and spoke enough English to communicate freely with me. It was one of the things I treasured. Finding out that some of these people actually had ancestors who came from Jamaica was also a bonus.
My young daughter communicated with some of these people after we left. I do not know what Mr Ramos would call them, but they looked black to me. They were waiters, cooks, maids, and supervisors in the resort I stayed in.
Cuba, like everywhere else, has more than it's share of problems, but not having black hotel staff is not one of them.
I am, etc.,
