Surely, you jest!
published: Wednesday | July 21, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

TELL ME this is not true. Christopher Columbus being honoured in Jamaica?

Is Mr Morgan's letter published on Tuesday just a hoax or is it accurate?

Columbus was lost; he bumped into the Caribbean by mistake. He and his crew were a bunch of disease-laden murderers. They caused the almost complete wipe-out of the Arawaks. Oh, I guess it's OK to kill or cause the death of people of colour.

Mr. Morgan's letter covered well the reasons why this idea of honouring the memory of Columbus is all wrong.

I would like to know who is responsible for doing this? Where did they learn their history? It is amazing that we still have people capable of making decisions like this who obviously knows nothing of our past. Marcus Garvey and Michael Manley must be turning in their graves.

I am, etc.,
