THE EDITOR, Sir:
NOW THAT Mr. Hugh Shearer has departed this life there are some people and interest groups (all emotional and watery-eye) proposing to re-name the Vere Technical High School after him. This call should not go unchallenged.
To those who desire such a change I ask: Why was not this proposed renaming of Vere Technical done when Mr. Shearer was alive? Would it not be more meaningful?
If these people/groups really want to Hon Mr. Shearer, as they claim, why stop only at re-naming Vere Technical High school? Why not rename Vere Plains the 'Shearer Plains'. I think Vere Technical High School is a symbolic learning institution to the people of Vere, and the name Vere Technical should remain as is. Moreover, Vere Technical sounds better than the proposed name.
Mr. Shearer deserves all the honours that he got and that others want to bestow on him. So, if some institution is to be named after Mr. Shearer let it be a new one. These persons/interest groups should just back off and leave Vere Technical alone.
I am, etc.,
