ST. CATHERINE'S Moses Jumi is the 2004/05 national champion farmer.

Mr. Jumi, who was also named champion farmer last year, won the title earlier this month, making six the number of times he has been declared national champion farmer.

It is expected that he will be presented with his garland and trophy during the 52nd annual Denbigh Agri-Industrial Show in Clarendon between July 31 and August 1.

Derrick Vermont, co-ordinator of champion farmer competition, said the contest involved "very good farms right across the island" despite the drought that has been affecting many parishes.

The champion farmer is selected based on the appearance of his/her farm, the innovative methods employed in farming and the quality of record keeping.

Mr. Vermont also said that Marcia Clarke from French Park in Manchester emerged winner of the 'Young Champion Farmer' competition.

Established ten years ago, the young champion farmer competition encourages persons aged 35 years and under to expand their agricultural knowledge, employing modern technological practices.

Sponsors of the competitions include Antilles Chemical Company, Hi-Pro Farm Supplies, the Jamaica Agricultural Development Foundation and British West Indies Airways.
