Grant IN ANOTHER six months, the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), in conjunction with the Jamaica Bureau of Standards (JBS), will introduce a seal of certification for local agricultural products that comform to required safety, quality and environmental standards.
The move is aimed at repositioning the agricultural sector and boosting the 'Eat Jamaican' campaign which was launched on November 25 last year.
DEFINING CRITERIA
Senator Norman Grant, president of the JAS, said his organisation and the Bureau of Standards would be defining criteria for local produce that would wear the seal of approval.
He said the introduction of the seal would help to increase the level of acceptance of Jamaican products.
He said that the Eat Jamaican campaign would continue to highlight that Jamaican products were among the best and that Jamaicans should support local industries.
Turning to commercial operations, the JAS president explained that the organisation had intensified these activities, acquiring a $2.5 million building in Port Antonio to advance its marketing plans.
"Compton House in Manchester will undergo a $4 million expansion project to generate income for the JAS and several other properties, have been leased," he said adding that over the next 18 months more than $2 million should be generated in income.
