THE EDITOR, Sir:NEARLY EVERY day there is a fire somewhere in the country that leaves devastation and sorrow behind.
On many occasions there is not enough water to keep even one fire engine going. I have suggested time and time again that a Rapid Response water truck be assigned to the fire stations. If this is implemented at all the stations across the country, it will provide an instant and continuous source of water to keep even one fire truck operating without having to leave the site of the fire.
It took eleven months for a part of this solution to happen in Mandeville. We now have drivers who are on call at night and on week-ends and while this is not the perfect solution, it at least helps the Fire Department in a town that is without a solid source of water most of the time.
My concern is why such simple solutions take so long to be implemented in view of the fact that the Government has failed so miserably to provide the necessary fire equipment to ensure the safety of its citizens.
I am therefore, appealing to my fellow councillors to lobby for this most important step to be taken in their areas. Meanwhile, we once again appeal to the Government to provide the adequate fire equipment and spare parts to keep Jamaicans safe.
I am, etc.,
