Anthony Foster, Freelance WriterALTHOUGH THERE weren't any finals on yesterday's second day at the National Table Tennis Championships, tournament director Robert Gabay was more than happy with how the three-day event was progressing.
Gabay said things were going "fairly smooth" and pointed to some outstanding performances from the young females.
"The highlight of the tournament so far is the performance of the junior girls. The youngsters defeated some of the most established national players," said Gabay yesterday.
14-Y-O DEFEATS FORMER NATIONAL
Former national player Collette Palmer was beaten by two juniors, 11-year-old Yvonne Foster and 14-year-old Janelle Morris. Foster also defeated many-time Business House singles champion Andrea Wads-worth to enable St. Andrew to beat St. Catherine in the women's parish final on Friday.
Meanwhile, in yesterday's action, Kaydiann Carney defeated Wadsworth 3-2, Shaunda Brash 3-2 and Marine Dawson 3-0 to advance along with Wadsworth, who returned to beat Brash 3-1 and Dawson 3-0 from Group Two, into the semi-finals.
In Group One, Nina Burton beat Michelle Harris 3-1 and Foster 3-0 while Foster bounced back to stop Harris 3-2. Advancing from Group Three are Collette Palmer and Janelle Morris who got walkovers into the semi-final group of the women's Open and will be joined by Burton and Foster.
MIXED DOUBLES
In the juniors' mixed doubles (Under-18) semi-final, the pair of Michael Cai/Brash beat Kane Watson/Morris 3-1 while the combination of Jason Lynch/ Foster got the better of Jermaine Newell/Fiona Genus 3-2. Today's final will be played at 3:00 p.m.
The women's doubles pair of Burton/Carney beat Foster/Morris 3-1 to set up a final clash with Palmer/Brash who got walkover against Wadsworth/Harris.
Rudolph Sinclair beat Donovan James 3-1 and Gary Pantry beat Altamont Henry 3-0 to advance to today's Rural men's singles final.
