St James crime unit reaps success
published: Tuesday | July 27, 2004

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE TWELVE-DAY-OLD special crime unit in St. James is reporting a string of successes in their intelligence-driven operations, along with increased support from residents for their anti-crime initiatives.

To date, the 21-man unit has recovered two illegal firearms, seven rounds of ammunition and has detained 15 persons, all of whom are to face identification parades in connection with murders and shootings committed in the parish.

Giving an update on the work of the unit, crime chief for the Area One Police Division, Senior Superintendent John Morris, said three men have also been charged with the triple murder committed in Norwood on July 12. The accused men have been identified as 24-year-old Joshua 'Joshie' Anderson, Omar Tucker, 24, also known as 'Bupacat', and Roy 'Jolo' James, 25.

The Area One chief, whose office manages the special unit, told The Gleaner yesterday that the team has been placing a heavy emphasis on the Glendevon, Norwood and Liliput communities. He said that Liliput, a squatter settlement located to the north east of Montego Bay, is now under their microscope as the areas is known as a safe haven for criminals.
