THE EDITOR, Sir:
I watched with shock and horror a recent TVJ newscast. The behaviour of the police is getting way out of hand. This is what the poor people of Jamaica are complaining about all the time. It was just lucky that a camera man was able to catch it. The police seem to think that they are above the law.
This cannot be allowed to continue unabated. I would like to hear from the Minister of National Security on this matter. Our news is broadcast abroad and it doesn't look good, especially when no one high up is saying anything. Taking the men in question off front-line duty is not enough. We have to make examples of them.
I also saw a sergeant being interviewed in the same newscast regarding another matter. He had his police vest on and proudly wore a cowboy hat. Is that part of the police uniform? Why is he allowed to dress that way? It looks like we have to go back to the drawing board and start at the training centre.
On second thoughts, I think the problem is when the new recruits get into the stations and see the "old" ones doing what they like, they just follow suit. So if children see policemen behaving this way, kicking and boxing big men, they will grow up thinking that it's OK. I am so disheartened with the way Jamaica is going. My heart bleeds. God help us!
I am, etc.,
