Wrong number for science camp
published: Wednesday | July 28, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE BUREAU of Standards Jamaica and the Scientific Research Council have advertised an attractive Summer Science Camp for children ages 9-13 to be held from 23rd-27th August 2004 at the Bureau of Standards. Registration was said to close on 23rd July and the telephone numbers to call were 977-2187 or 927-2771-4. My telephone number for some 20 years has been 927-2773. The numbers 927-2771-2 are "no longer in service" and 927-2774 has been temporarily out of service from when the ad started. Several attempts to call 977-2187 went unanswered.

After receiving numerous calls last Monday (July 19) and messages on my voice mail (despite owner identification given), I called the Bureau of Standards on Tuesday the 20th at another number and made a strong complaint. Yesterday (Monday 26th) I was fortunately away from home but returned to some 15 calls on my voice mail none being intended for me. I discovered that the advertisement was again in Sunday's paper with numbers unchanged.

Is this what one must expect from a Bureau of 'Standards'? Or are standards only applicable to "quality of cooking oil" etc.

I am, etc.,

JOHN A. MAXWELL
