JAMAICA'S HOPES of a bold showing in the blue-riband Boys Under-18 section at the Cable and Wireless/ITF Jamaica Juniors tournament were all but doused at the Liguanea Club, New Kingston yesterday.

Well before the rain came and washed out three hours of mid-afternoon play, five of the six Jamaicans to reach the second round of the event had been eliminated.

Eldad Campbell was the sole local survivor in the section as the No. 16 seed reeled off an impressive 6-2, 6-0 victory over Amar Vora of Great Britain.

However, his compatriots were unable to recapture their first-round form and were comfortably beaten by tough international opponents.

Perhaps the most "unlucky" was the highly-rated Dominic Pagon who drew dangerous American floater Nathan Rosenfeld. The Jamaican No. 12 seed battled gamely before falling 6-2, 6-4 to a player who would be ranked substantially higher but for his limited appearances in Junior events.

Of the other local hopes, Tyler Chin was no match for Panama's David Lopez and went down 6-4, 6-1 while Peter Miller was almost 'doughnutted' by Brazil's Gustavo Carvalho, 6-1, 6-0. Christopher Lawson was outclassed by American No. 9 seed Marek Czerwinski, 6-1, 6-1 and Marlon Downer was swamped by the Netherland Antilles' No. 15 seed Rasid Winklaar, 6-1, 6-0.

Also advancing to the third round were top seed Luiz Diaz Barriga of Mexico and his compatriot Leonardo de Regules, Aruba's Jose Luis Muguruza and Gian Hodgson, Conrad Olson of Belgium, No. 5 seeded Peruvian Jose Carlos Tolentino, South Korea's Yusung Lim, Roy Paul Bottse of the Dutch Antilles and St. Lucian Alberton Richelieu.

While their senior counterparts floundered the Under-12 boys kept the green, black and gold flying high as Brandon Burke, Sheldon McIntosh, Randy Phillips and Jordan Harris won their opening group round-robin encounters.

Under-12 girls Shantal Blackwood, Monique Hanson and Sicquena Sinclair also racked up victories before the rain came.
