THE EDITOR, Sir:
IRREVERANCE OF law and order at different levels of the society is like a millstone around the neck of the nation. And the nation cries, "Who will protect me?"
I assume that laws were made to guide and protect individuals, groups and institutions in any society. It is also my view that all stewards of the law should protect the majority who are law-abiding constituents, individually and collectively, from breakers of the law, or at least assist in such a way to discourage law-breakers disrupting the intended orderly arrangement of our society.
Observations and careful study of documents will show where some of the brilliant sons and daughters of our nation have 'petted' some lawbreakers and, in the process, released some notorious criminals on us.
We will not have a reasonably safe society, when some of our best minds are committed to assisting in making it unsafe for law-abiding citizens. It is also my view that these influential groups and individuals should not be free to disregard the majority of law-abiding citizens in the presence of the very laws which seek to protect them and penalise deviants.
Circumstances now dictate the marshalling of the whole society to alienate wrongdoers.
I am, etc.,
DESMOND SMITH
