Orane for PSOJ Hall of Fame
published: Thursday | July 29, 2004

DOUGLAS ORANE, the chief executive officer of Grace, Kennedy & Company Ltd., will be inducted into the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica's (PSOJ) Hall of Fame on September 30.

President of the PSOJ, Mrs. Beverley Lopez, noted that "Mr. Orane is an individual who has continually pursued excellence and has demonstrated superior leadership abilities and management skills throughout his career".

Mr. Orane was educated at Wolmer's Boys School, Glasgow University and Harvard Business School. He is a past president of the PSOJ and served for two terms (1992-1994).

TOPICAL ISSUES

During his tenure as president, he gained national attention for his views on topical issues, particularly on electoral reform. Mr. Orane served as an independent senator for the years 1998 to 2003. During that time, he chaired the Select Committee on the Companies Act, which led to significant modernization of the Bill, passed by Parliament this year.

He also chaired the committee appointed to reduce waste in the Government sector, which produced a final document, colloquially known as the Orane Report, whose recommendations caught the imagination of the Jamaican public.

As a corporate leader, Douglas Orane has made outstanding contributions to the society through channels such as the Grace & Staff Community Deve-lopment Foundation and the Grace, Kennedy Jamaican Birth-right Programme. Additionally, he has been the patron of 'Child Month' since 1999.

CONTRIBUTION

In August 2002, he was awarded the Order of Distinction in the rank of commander for his contribution to commerce and the private sector.

The PSOJ Hall of Fame is designed to honour Jamaican businessmen who have made significant contributions to the development of the private sector and our country. The nominees should have served in Jamaica's private sector for at least 25 years and should also have in-depth knowledge of and commitment to his or her field and be of sound character and unquestionable integrity. High ethical standards should be the trademark of his or her business deals and practices. In addition, the nominees' companies must be successful with above average growth.

Douglas Orane will be honoured at the PSOJ's annual Hall of Fame banquet, to be held at the Hilton Kingston Hotel in September. Mr. Orane's is the 12th person to be inducted into the PSOJ Hall of Fame and follows that of Karl Hendrickson, chairman of National Continental Corporation in 2003.
