Overcomers shall overcome

THE EDITOR, Sir;
I READ an interesting letter posted by D. Alleyene, an alleged Eastern Caribbeanner, scoffing at Jamaica's so-called fall from grace and their corresponding rise in the Eastern Caribbean, in The Gleaner July 26, 2004.
Firstly it seems strange that someone who actually lives in Jamaica would be scoffing at Jamaica's challenges. It may speak of two things, the person is ungrateful, biting the hand that feeds him or her and also leaves the question, why is this eastern Caribbeaner living in Jamaica and not the so-called prosperous eastern Caribbean.
Such a person is very insular in my view and also has to be careful that there is not a bit of envy towards Jamaica's greatness and the fact that we are the sporting and cultural mecca of the region and our impact on world history is unparalleled and will remain that way. We do have many problems but we are overcomers and shall overcome. Whatever improvement there is the Eastern Caribbean owes a lot to Jamaica too, its Jamaicans that purchase Eastern Caribbean goods, so they have nothing to boast about but should instead be thanking Jamaica.
I am, etc.,
