Use money to equip police
published: Friday | July 30, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ in your paper recently that the city will be spending millions of dollars on city re-development. That is all very good . But if people cannot attend to their affairs without fear when they enter the city what is the good of re-development? The crime and murder rates are very high in the city.

The redevelopment plans should be put on hold and the millions to be spent allotted to the police. This could help to employ more police and equipment. Crime and violence have an urgency. There must be an increase in the social plans to help the poor through these hard times to run concomitantly with equipping and employing more police.

The Government and the private sector are seeking to re-develop "wood and stone" but where is the development plan for the people? Where is the hope? Now more than ever there must be a new vision for the people, the modus operandi is out-dated and archaic, this cannot carry the people into the future. Without vision the people perish.

I am, etc.,
