WHILE MANY parents might be concerned about some of the Internet websites that their children surf through, Cable and Wireless and Childnet Interna-tional are helping children to use the 'Internet innovatively to
benefit other young people' through its Childnet competition.
The Childnet competition is an international web design programme open to young people aged 18 and under who are using the Internet positively to benefit other children. The competition targets young people who are developing exciting online projects either as individuals or in their school. There are three categories in the competion: Individual, School and 'New to the Net'.
WEBSITE PROTOTYPE
Last year Immaculate Concep-tion High School Student Carrie-Ann Gordon became the first Jamaican to win the 'New to Net' category. Her entry, Youngadults2youngadults, is a website prototype that provides a place for teens and young adults to help one another.
The competion will be hosted in Jamaica next year.
Speaking to journalists at the Cable & Wireless Head Office, Errol Miller, Cable & Wireless' head of corporate communications, said, "Cable & Wireless has a commitment to national development. This is just another initiative that we take on a regular basis."

Stephen Carrick-Davies, CEO of Childnet, said: "Over the last seven years, Childnet has run the awards programme in many parts of the world in partnership with Cable & Wireless and we're extremely excited to be returning to the Caribbean and hosting the Academy in Jamaica. This will give all the winners a wonderful opportunity to find out more about Caribbean culture, and learn from local young people how they're using the Internet for good."
The Childnet Academy winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to attend the Cable & Wireless Childnet programme, a share of prize money from a special 30,000 pounds prize fund established by Cable & Wireless and web support and advice from the team at Childnet International.
