Girls still undefeated
published: Thursday | August 5, 2004

By Kimone Thompson, Gleaner Writer

JAMAICA'S SUNSHINE Girls are undefeated after three games at the 21st Caribbean Netball Championship, having outshone St. Kitts 68-24 in their match at the Jean Pierre Complex in Trinidad yesterday.

In similar fashion to demolitions of the previous two nights, Jamaica's national netballers stunned the Kittitians with a brilliant victory that signalled their intent to cop the title when the championships close on Saturday.

The girls took control of the match from the outset and at the end of the first quarter led 26-3. Ranked No. 3 in the world, Jamaica stifled the Kittitians' chances and limited them to a meagre eight goals at the end of the second quarter while scoring 41 themselves.

With the die already cast, the third quarter brought no surprises when the Sunshine Girls climbed to a handsome 32-goal lead with the scoreboard reading 52-20.

Even with a fairly inexperienced starting line-up that included Tasha Morgan (WA), Tameka Stewart (WD) and Kaydia Kentish (GD), the girls presented a formidable challenge to St. Kitts.

DAVIS' CONTRIBUTION

Goal Shooter Elaine Davis contributed the most points scoring 47 of 48 attempts. Marvetta Murray came in second with 13 of 14 tries and Tiffany Wolfe securing eight of 10.

After a sensational 106-10 win over Nevis in their opening game of the Champs on Monday night, the Jamaicans continued on their merry way the following evening, beating St. Lucia 74-20 in a rain-affected match.

"We're not here to under-rate any team," national coach Janet Guy told The Gleaner. "We feel good that we're winning but we're just taking it step by step," she said.

In today's matches, Jamaica will face St. Vincent.

Tomorrow they will meet hosts Trinidad and Tobago in an encounter which could decide the title.

Their campaign winds up on Saturday against Barbados.
