'We are not for sale'
published: Friday | August 6, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM extremely angry and disappointed with the Government and their elected officials for agreeing to the imposition of a toll fee to access/exit the dormitory community of Portmore. We have been sold out in a form of extortion by a Government starved of ideas. Our resistance will be resolute and will not be by a 'handful of negatives' but the citizens of the dorm. WE ARE NOT FOR SALE.

The current road construction is necessary and overdue to us as residents. Any new road development should focus on the construction of new access/exit routes to Portmore and not the improvement on existing roads such as the Causeway and then charging us.

The solution is that the developers should have been asked to examine the rail route with a view to transforming it into a commutable roadway. This, I am sure, would be costly and would justify paying a toll. This is the type of development that we yearn for. Portmore must not be used as a cash cow by a Government in an auction sale.

I am, etc.,

HOWARD HAMILTON
