DavisHIGHLY-RATED St Vincent and the Grenadines were no match for Jamaica in their clash at the 21st Caribbean Netball Association Championships in Trinidad last night going down 68-28 to world's No. 3 rated side.
The Jamaicans, led by Kasey Evering (GK), Oberon Pitterson (GD), Nichala Gibson (WD), Nadine Bryan (C), Tasha Morgan (WA), Simone Forbes (GA) and Elaine Davis (GS), the Jamaicans simply overwhelmed their foes.
As was the case in their previous matches, the Sunshine Girls gained control very early in the game restricting their opponents to a single figure score at the end of the first quarter (seven). The Vincentians only managed to add five goals in both the second and third quarters taking them to 12 and then 17 while the Jamaicans soared to 38 and 56 at those breaks.
At final whistle, the score read 68-28 with Jamaica celebrating an anticipated fourth victory.
WEAKNESSES
National coach Janet Guy said from the Jean Pierre Complex after the match that despite the win, there were a few weaknesses in the team but added that it worked out well in the end.
She said Jamaica stuck to the game plan and capitalised on St Vincent's centre passes which created numerous turnovers and repossessions.
"There were quite a lot of turnovers and the shooters made good use of them. However, we were losing a little bit in the attacking area but the defenders were good," Guy said.
With reference to today's match between the Sunshine Girls and Trinidad, which will likely determine the winners of the competition, she said the hosts posed little threat.
"It will be competitive but we should take control," she said.
Last night's win was the fourth consecutive one for the Girls since the start of the championships and from all indications, they seem set to walk away with the trophy after facing Barbados tomorrow.
