Barbados, Guyana victorious on final day

FORMER CHAMPIONS Barbados and Guyana completed victories over the Windward and Leeward Islands respectively on the third and final day of their first round TCL Group West Indies Under-19 three-day championship matches yesterday.

Barbados secured a seven-wicket win over the Windward Islands at Chedwin Park while Guyana carved out a six-wicket win over Leeward Islands at Goodyear Oval in St. Thomas.

At Goodyear Oval, in pursuit of a victory target of 174, Guyana reached 177 for four with Anthony D'Andrade leading the way with 50. He got support from Krishna Deosaran, 28, and Leon Johnson, 24 not out.

Earlier, resuming on their overnight 93 for five, the Leewards were dismissed in the final half-hour before lunch as only Montcin Hodge, 50 not out, offered any great resistance.

Zaheer Mohammed (4-43) and Zaheer Saffie (2-19) took the most wickets.

Final scores: Leewards 234 (Justin Athanaze 101, Montcin Hodge 33, Kemoi Alexander 27; Zaheer Saffie 3-27, Gajanand Singh 2-26, Zaheer Mohammed 2-66) and 180 (Montcin Hodge 50 not out, Javia Liburd 28, Justin Athanaze 20; Zaheer Mohammed 4-43, Zaheer Saffie 2-19).

Guyana 241 (Zamal Khan 64, Gajanand Singh 41, Krishna Deosaran 30, Tyrell Tull 30; Dillon Skellekie 3-62, Chad Hampson 2-30, Ian Byron 2-48) and 177 for six.

At Chedwin Park, fast bowler Ruel Brathwaite took 5-40 and captain Renaldo Parris scored an undefeated 52 to set up Barbados' victory.

Parris, who struck five fours and one six off 135 balls, got solid support from Nicholas Squires, 20. Brathwaite's five-wicket haul saw him end with match figures of nine for 68.

In Windwards' innings, Ronald Etienne top scored with 53 which included four fours and two sixes. Steve Pinder ended with 3-60.

Final scores: Windward Islands 197 (Ronald Etienne 101, Mervyn Matthew 22, Orlando Brown 21; Ruel Brathwaite 4-28) and 164 (Ronald Etienne 53, Earven Frederick 22; Ruel Brathwaite 5-40, Steve Pinder 3-60).

Barbados 252 (Renaldo Parris 64, Nicholas Squires 38, Neval Grazette 28, Kevin Stoute 25; Mervyn Matthew 3-46, Javon Samuel 3-60, Asa Edwards 2-29) and 110 for three (Renaldo Parris 52 not out, Nicholas Squires 20; Javon Samuel 2-28).

The second roundstarts tomorrow: ZONE A: Windward Islands vs Americas at Ewarton; Barbados vs Jamaica at Elletson Road; ZONE B: Leeward Islands vs Trinidad & Tobago at Up Park Camp; Bermuda vs Guyana at Nelson Oval.
