THE EDITOR: Sir,
I CAN understand the concerns of the citizens of Portmore re the paying of a toll to get into Kingston. I also understand the position of the developers that solid development leading to convenience does not come free. And I see no disparity between these two positions, if the following steps be taken:
1) Allow the developers to construct the six-lane super highway and charge a fair toll for its use. For the people who want a fast and hassle-free commute into Kingston, I expect that they will take the toll road.
2) Ensure that all the current accesses that the residents have to Kingston (i.e. via Caymanas to Ferry, and via the causeway bridge) be maintained for the people who want to continue enjoying what their tax dollars have already built.
With this arrangement the choice will be up to the people which route they wish to choose and when. If a person is hurrying and needs to get into Kingston fast they may wish to pay for the convenience to do so and use the toll road. Whenever their financial position is such that they prefer to save that toll money, they use the alternate routes.
My suggestion to the residents of Portmore is this; do not settle for one Iota less than the current access that you are now enjoying but don't expect to enjoy the added convenience for free.
I am, etc.,
