PERCEIVED AS the Mahfood of the Mahfood family, Evelyn Mahfood passed away peacefully at her home in Stony Hill, St. Andrew, yesterday morning after suffering for a short time from pneumonia.
Mrs. Mahfood, who was 92, was described as a very loving and generous individual by her grandson, William Mahfood.
"She was probably one of the most generous persons you would have probably met, caring and loving, she was really a caregiver and also she really loved her family very much...," he related as he reflected on the life of his grandmother.
CEMENTED THE FAMILY
"She was the person who kind of cemented the whole family and brought everybody together," added Mr. Mahfood.
Mrs. Mahfood, whose death has come almost exactly a year after the passing of her son Sam on August 5, 2003, is the mother of six children, the grandmother of 21 grandchildren, and the great grandmother of 36.
During her active years, she was said to have played an integral role in the running of Food for the Poor, a large non-governmental charitable organisation based in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, and other organisations run by her family.
SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES
The Mahfood family is best known for operating what can be regarded as one of Jamaica's most successful companies, the Wisynco Trading Company, makers of Bigga soft drinks and the distributors of numerous food and household products, and Food for the Poor.
"It's very difficult (for the family) because she was such a central part of everybody's life... she was the centre of the family for so many years," William Mahfood said.
A thanksgiving service for Mrs. Mahfood will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Stella Maris Church in St. Andrew at 11:00 a.m.
