A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy perished yesterday morning when fire destroyed his home on Nugent Street, Ewarton, St. Catherine.

The boy is identified as Oshane Fong, the second child of Patricia Williams. He was home alone when the fire engulfed the one-bedroom home about 8:15 a.m. According to police reports, his mother locked the baby inside the house and on returning home, she discovered that the house was on fire.

Residents agreed that it was unlike Ms. Williams to leave the baby alone at home. "She would normally leave the baby by the father next door. But him gone to work early this morning," an elderly woman said.

Williams claimed that she left the baby and went to the shop because he was sleeping.

A fire unit from the Linstead Fire Department was called in to extinguish the blaze. The police are theorising that the fire could have resulted from an electrical short circuit based on the presence of scraps of illegal electrical wiring lying at the back of the house.
